Archaeological site of Sounio
Cape Sounion is the promontory located at the southernmost tip of the Attic peninsula, 8 kilometers (5 miles) south of the town of Lavrio (ancient Thoricus) and 70 kilometers (43 miles) southeast of Athens. It is part of the Lavreotiki municipality in East Attica and is 59.6 kilometers from Athens.
Cape Sounion is renowned for the Temple of Poseidon, a significant monument from the Golden Age of Athens. The remains of this ancient temple sit atop the headland, surrounded on three sides by the sea, offering a picturesque and historically rich site.
Temple of Poseidon
The ancient Greek Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion, constructed between 444 and 440 BC, stands as one of the major monuments of the Golden Age of Athens. This Doric temple overlooks the sea from the end of Cape Sounion, perched at an elevation of nearly 60 meters (200 feet).
Lake Vouliagmeni
If the “Without food” option is selected, during our return to Athens, we will stop at one of the most idyllic spots: Vouliagmeni Lake, located in the heart of the Athenian Riviera. This hidden gem of Attica’s nature, Lake Vouliagmeni (“Sunken Lake”), is a small brackish-water lake fed by underground currents that seep through the mass of Mount Hymettus, situated to the south of Vouliagmeni.
Lavrio
If the “With Traditional Greek Food” option is selected, we will make a stop at a tavern near the coastal city of Lavrio to indulge in authentic Greek cuisine and traditional dishes.
