The surrounding region is mountainous, with agricultural activities primarily taking place in the valleys. Monastery of Hossios Loukas
Arrival at the Monastery of Hossios Loukas after a 2-hour journey.
Hossios Loukas is a historic walled monastery located near Distomo in Boeotia, Greece. Recognized as one of the most significant examples of Middle Byzantine architecture and art, it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, alongside the monasteries of Nea Moni and Daphnion.
Nestled on the scenic slopes of Mount Helicon, the Monastery of Hossios Loukas was established in the early 10th century AD by the hermit Venerable (Greek: Hossios) Luke of Steiris (Greek: Lukas). The hermit’s relics remain preserved in the monastery.
The primary shrine within the monastery is the tomb of St. Luke, which was initially located in the vault but was later moved to the junction of the two churches. The monastery’s wealth, which funded its construction, stemmed from the relics of St. Luke, believed to exude myron, a perfumed oil reputed to have healing properties.
Mount Parnassus
Mount Parnassus, situated in central Greece, rises above Delphi to the north of the Gulf of Corinth. It offers numerous benefits to the Greek population. During times of peace, the mountain presents breathtaking vistas of the countryside, adorned with olive groves and gentle hills. It also hosts historically, archaeologically, and culturally significant sites such as Delphi.
For recreational pursuits, the slopes of Mount Parnassus serve as excellent hiking trails during the warmer months and transform into ski slopes during winter. Its snowmelt contributes vital water resources to the surrounding communities, extending as far as Athens. Composed primarily of limestone, the mountain’s rocky terrain contains bauxite, an aluminum-rich ore.
In times of conflict, Mount Parnassus has historically served as a bastion of resistance, providing cover and refuge for partisans when necessary. Thus, beyond its natural beauty and recreational opportunities, Parnassus holds strategic importance in both peace and wartime contexts for Greece.

Temple of Apollo
The Temple of Apollo, dedicated to the god of music, harmony, light, healing, and oracles, held a central and revered position within the Delphic Panhellenic Sanctuary. The structure that stands today, featuring a partially restored colonnade, dates back to the 4th century BC and represents the third temple constructed on the same site.
Within the temple resided the renowned oracle, known as the Pythia, whose prophetic utterances were sought after by ancient Greeks seeking guidance and insight. According to tradition, the temple’s location was chosen due to a sacred chasm beneath it, emitting vapors believed to induce an altered state of consciousness in the Pythia.
Ancient accounts vary regarding the Pythia’s trance-like state during prophecy. Some sources suggest she entered a state of delirium, emitting incoherent cries that were interpreted by priests into ambiguous oracles. However, this interpretation has been contested by scholars like Joseph Fontenrose and Lisa Maurizio, who argue that ancient sources consistently portray the Pythia speaking coherently and delivering prophecies in her own voice.
